The Fightin’ Brine
The year was 1932, A young group of Canadians had moved down from Manitoba to work at the Great Saltair. These boys were a gruff bunch and itching for sport. After seeing the success of their brothers at Saltair FC, they approached the owners of the site and asked if they could add some ice to the Pavillion’s dance floor and start a team of their own. Little did anyone know, this was the birth of something great, The Saltair Fightin’ Brine Hockey Team.
The ring leader of the team Wally “Bones” Belfour was an absolute unit, Wally was know for fighting entire teams on his own. Wally, and his rag tag team turned into a force competing in the NAHA (North American Hockey Association) for the Moose cup.
During their first season, the Fightin’ Brine took home the Moose cup after a resounding 13-0 win against the Victoria Barons. The most staggering stat was the 430 penalty minutes between the two teams, it was a bloodbath.
The Fightin’ Brine only played 3 seasons in the NAHA, citing ice issues due to the salinity levels in the area. Most games would have been better off on roller blades, if they had existed.
